Detroit's Most Wanted formally called "Def Drive" was a rap hip hop group from Detroit, Michigan. The group "Def Drive" was formed early in 1988 by founding members DJ Duncan Hines (b. Wilbert L. Hines 1968) and Motsi Ski (b. Reginald Abrams 1970, the grandson of late R&B singer Jackie Wilson), MC Lee (b. Robert Lee Jr 1969) joined the group later that same year. Andre Hines the brother of Duncan Hines played an instrumental role in developing the groups early image and sound. Andre introduced the group to manager/producer Alex Greene who signed the group to their first production agreement. Greene and Hines immediately arranged recording sessions at United Sound Recording Studio in Detroit to begin recording "Words For Wax" which became "Tricks Of The Trade" the group's first album. In October 1988, once half of the album was completed and mixed, Greene was now both manager and producer for the group and flew to NYC in search of a record deal. Motsi Ski was staying at Greene's residence and became close friends with Greene's son Brandon aka Ocean Zero. After watching an episode of Americas Most Wanted Brandon Greene suggested the group change their name to "Detroit's Most Wanted" referencing to the both America's Most Wanted List List and the California rap group Compton's Most Wanted. In 1989 Dretroit's Most Wanted and Greene parted company due to creative differences, making the group available to sign an independent recording contract with Joel Bryant CEO of BPI Records in Detroit. They were signed to Ichiban Records.
