How have I been? Well, I have been and in my being I have seen the futility of life, I have tirelessly groped the walls of uncertainty for a door, crack or window Out of this season's strangling fog I have seen the limits of science I have seen the failure of structures we swore were sturdy I have been stuck somewhere between today and tomorrow's semicolon I have been scared, scarred, scathed and scattered Into sacred, sober silent, submission - This could be it This could be it??? I have stumbled into searing grief Wept in disbelief at numbers that were once names I have been at tipping point trying to stay clear of the cliff So sure one more news reel will send me reeling, spiralling, crashing I have seen lack stuff itself down throats, choking self-preservation and caution I have caught my mind venturing into wells of no return I have been burdened by anchors of concern and worry trying to drown me Bowed my head, Pleaded for mercy so Society's sudden selah ceases Sunk to my knees, Lifted my eyes and surely began to see it I have seen mercy now more than ever In God's steadfastness against our capriciousness If it had not been for God's firm grip on me, I would have slipped into thick nothingness I have seen mercy now more than ever In His unfailing hands that bear us up In death sentences overturned and weak bodies strengthened I have seen mercy in life's bubble, blossom, buttercup, birthing and blooming through insanity In God's nearness, in nature's incognizance In the early orange of day and late purple of dusk I have seen mercy now more than ever In our ability to adopt, adapt, adjust and adroit I have seen mercy and found joy In unrestrained care and affection In the church being all He commanded In community coming into unity to communicate solidarity. I have seen parent and child joined again by an umbilical cord Seen support transcend space, time, borders, distance and connection I have seen needs met, frowns reset, forgotten debt I have seen mercy in the futility of life but I'll also tell you what I have learned, We are all we have So when I tell you to let your loud love lavishly fill every soundless void To let it be the roaming voice of hope to every heart devoid To ensure every means is employed In bringing your neighbor hope and help to be enjoyed Like prayer in a hug, assurance for every shrug or a filled jug, Like your light shining so darkness I may avoid I hope you season our world with your salt so our good flavor may not be destroyed I hope someone isn't allowed to quit and crash because you were their droid I hope you, yes you, stay ready to be deployed as loud lavish love. I have seen the futility of life but what a gift you are to this world.
