About Regret

"Regret" is a song by British alternative rock band New Order. It was released in April 1993 as the lead single from their album of the same year, Republic. Stephen Hague is credited as both the producer and as a co-writer. It was also the band's first single released through London Records following the collapse of Factory Records. The single was released worldwide in a variety of formats. The B-side of the single differed in the various releases, but all were remixes of the A-side, including the "Fire Island Mix", and "Junior Dub" by Pete Heller and Terry Farley, and two Sabres of Paradise mixes. The song was a commercial success, reaching the top 10 in Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. It peaked at number 28 on the US Billboard Hot 100—New Order's highest placement on that chart—and reached number one on two other Billboard charts. Peter Care directed a music video for the song; the video appears on the "Regret" promotional VHS, as well as a DVD collection. In 2010 Pitchfork Media included the song at number 34 on their Top 200 Tracks of the 90s. Tom Ewing of Freaky Trigger also named it his 37th favourite single of the 1990s. Peter Hook has said that "Regret" was the last good New Order song.

Maybe I've forgotten
The name and the address
Of everyone I've ever known,
It's nothing I regret
Save it for another day, 'cause
The school is out
And the kids have run away

I would like a place I can call my own
Have a conversation on my telephone
Wake up everyday, that would be a start
I would not complain 'bout my wounded heart

I was upset, you see
Almost all the time
You used to be a stranger
Now you are mine

I wouldn't even trust you
I've not that much to give
We're dealing in the limits,
And we don't know who with

You may think that I'm out of hand
That I'm naive, I'll understand
On this occasion, it's not true
Look at me, I'm not you

I would like a place I can call my own
Have a conversation on the telephone
Wake up everyday, that would be a start
I would not complain 'bout my wounded heart

I was a short fuse
Burning all the time
You were a complete stranger
Now you are mine

I would like a place I can call my own
Have a conversation on the telephone
Wake up everyday, that would be a start
I would not complain 'bout my wounded heart

Just wait 'till tomorrow
I guess that's what they all say
Just before they fall apart

In 1993 the band broke-up amidst tension between bandmembers, but reformed in 1998. In 2001, Phil Cunningham (guitars, synthesisers) replaced Gilbert, who left the group due to family commitments. In 2007, Peter Hook left the band and the band broke-up again, with Sumner saying in 2009 that he no longer wishes to make music as New Order. The band reunited in 2011 without Hook, with Gilbert returning to the fold a… more »
