About If You're Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band)

"If You're Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band)" is a song written by Murray Kellum and Dan Mitchell, and recorded by American country music band Alabama. It was released in July 1984 as the B-side of the third single from the band's Roll On album. Though "I'm Not That Way Anymore" was released as the A-side, radio programmers preferred the flipside and the song became the group's 14th consecutive number-one single on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. During the first weeks "If You're Gonna Play in Texas..." was on the Billboard chart, "I'm Not That Way Anymore" charted concurrently, being listed as a tag-along B-side. Since "I'm Not That Way" was intended as the A-side, the song had an accompanying music video which was filmed at Fort Payne High School. The chorus references "Faded Love" by Texas musician Bob Wills and "Louisiana Man" by Doug Kershaw repeatedly throughout this song. The song was used as the basis of "If You're Gonna Run in Texas", a radio campaign advertisement produced as part of Ted Cruz's campaign for United States Senate in 2018.

If you're gonna play in Texas,
You gotta have a fiddle in the band.
That lead guitar is hot,
But not for "Louisiana man".
So rosin up that bow for "faded love"
And let's all dance.
If you're gonna play in Texas,
You gotta have a fiddle in the band.

I remember down in Houston
We were puttin' on a show
When a cowboy in the back stood up and yelled,
"Cotton-Eyed Joe"!

He said, "we love what you're doin'.
Boys don't get us wrong,
There's just somethin' missin' in your song.

If you're gonna play in Texas,
You gotta have a fiddle in the band.
That lead guitar is hot,
But not for "Louisiana man".
So rosin up that bow for "faded love"
And let's all dance.
If you're gonna play in Texas,
You gotta have a fiddle in the band.

So we dusted off our boots and put our cowboy hats on straight.
Them Texans raised the roof when Jeff opened up his case.
You say y'all all want to two-step. you say ya want to doe-si-doe.
Well, here's a fiddlin' song before we go.

If you're gonna play in Texas,
You gotta have a fiddle in the band.
That lead guitar is hot,
But not for "Louisiana man".
So rosin up that bow for "faded love"
And let's all dance.
If you're gonna play in Texas,
You gotta have a fiddle in the band.

If you're gonna play in Texas,
You gotta have a fiddle in the band.
That lead guitar is hot,
But not for "Louisiana man".
So rosin up that bow for "faded love"
And let's all dance.
If you're gonna play in Texas,
You gotta have a fiddle in the band.

Alabama

Alabama is a country music and southern rock band from Fort Payne, Alabama, United States. The band was founded in 1969 by Randy Owen (lead vocals, Rhythm Guitar) and his cousin Teddy Gentry (bass guitar, background vocals), soon joined by Jeff Cook (Lead Guitar, fiddle, keyboards). In 1973, after Owen's graduation from Jacksonville State University, they gave up their day jobs and weekend gigs. The group, formerly known as "Wildcountry", left Fort Payne and Lookout Mountain to explore the possibilities of the club scene in surrounding coastal South Carolina. The band is often credited with bringing country music groups (as opposed to solo vocalists) into the mainstream, paving the way for the success of today's top country groups. Since i… more »
