A Pair of Old Sneakers

George Jones, Tammy Wynette

About A Pair of Old Sneakers

"A Pair of Old Sneakers" is a duet by country music artists George Jones and Tammy Wynette. It was released as the second single from their 1980 duet album Together Again, but it was not as successful as their previous hit "Two Story House", peaking at No. 19 on the country singles chart. Written by Glenn Sutton and Larry Kingston, the song comically uses sneakers as a metaphor for two cheating lovers ("We're just a pair of old sneakers, stringin' each other along..."). After the Together Again sessions, Jones and Wynette would not record again until the 1994 Jones LP Bradley Barn Sessions and would not release another single until "One" in 1995.

We're just a pair of old sneakers
Stringin' each other along
Sometimes i feel just like a heel
'cause i know in my soul, that it's wrong

We're just a pair of old sneakers
Kickin' each other around
Eight times a week, we play 'hide an' cheat'
'Til we've run that game in the ground

We're just a pair of old sneakers
We know that cheatin' is wrong
We're just a pair of old sneakers
And we've been in the closet too long

We're just a pair of old sneakers
Worn out an' comin' unglued
Both wearin' rings, feelin' ashamed
Tryin' to run from the truth

We're just a pair of old sneakers
And nothin' can tear us apart
Living the lie and lord knows we've tried
To stop walking on each other's heart

We're just a pair of old sneakers
We know that cheatin' is wrong
We're just a pair of old sneakers
And we've been in the closet too long

We're just a pair of old sneakers
And we've been in the closet too long
