Mayonaise

About Mayonaise

"Mayonaise" [sic] is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins, first officially released on the 1993 breakthrough album Siamese Dream. It was written by Billy Corgan and James Iha and was recorded from December 1992 to March 1993 at Triclops Sound Studios. According to Corgan, the whistling sound (feedback) heard in "Mayonaise" came from a cheap guitar he bought, which, whenever he stopped playing it, created the whistling sound. This sound was then incorporated into the song. Corgan apparently got the title for the song after he looked "in [his] refrigerator". Later, he stated in an interview with a Colombian radio station that the name stands for the phonetics of 'My Own Eyes'. Despite having garnered considerable radio play and remaining a fan favorite, "Mayonaise" was never an officially released single. In 2012 it won a Rolling Stone readers poll for "The Best Smashing Pumpkins Songs" by "a significant margin".

Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
Doomed
Pick your pockets full of sorrow
Run away with me tomorrow
June

Try, ease the pain
Somehow we'll feel the same
Well, no one knows
Where our secrets go

I send a heart to all my dearies
When your life is so, so dreary
Dream
I'm rumored to the straight and narrow
While the harlots of my perils
Scream

And I fail
But when I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

Mother weep the years I'm missing
All our time can't be given
Back
Shut my mouth and strike the demons
Cursed you and your reasons
Out of hand and out of season
Out of love and out of feeling
So bad

When I can, I will
Words defy the plan
When I can, I will

Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
Old enough to always feel this
Always old, I'll always feel this

No more promise no more sorrow
No longer will I follow
Can anybody hear me
I just want to be me
When I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

10 facts about this song

Song Origins
"Mayonaise" is a song by American alternative rock band Smashing Pumpkins. It was released in 1993 as part of their second studio album, "Siamese Dream."
Meaning of Title
Contrary to what the title suggests, the song isn't about the condiment; it's a word that was invented by Billy Corgan and James Iha. The title "Mayonaise" came out completely randomly during the demo process and has no significance to the song's lyrics or meaning.
Band Members
The song is credited to James Iha and Billy Corgan, hinting that they both played a significant role in the song’s creation, although Billy Corgan is considered the principal songwriter for the band.
Popular Among The Fans
Despite not being released as a commercial single, "Mayonaise" is considered a fan favorite and is often listed among the band’s best songs.
Song And Melancholy
The song is often referred to as the heart of "Siamese Dream" as its melancholic and soul-stirring tunes resonate with listeners.
Unique Sound Effect
The unique squeaking sound you hear in the song is the result of a metal slide accidentally bouncing against the strings of James Iha's guitar. It wasn’t intentional, but they liked the sound and decided to keep it in the final mix.
Music Inspiration
One interpretation of "Mayonaise" is that it is about feeling alienated. This song depicts the darkness and loneliness that Billy Corgan felt growing up.
Frequent Concert Closure
The song is frequently used as the final song at concerts due to its crescendos and intense emotion. It creates the perfect ending atmosphere for performances.
Cultural Impact
In the "Simpsons" episode "Homerpalooza," Homer Simpson meets Billy Corgan and when asked how he's doing, Corgan replies, "Depressed. Our last three albums didn't sell very well." To which Homer responds, "Weird. I have all your old albums and they're great." Then Corgan said, "Maybe you'd like our new album," and Homer says, "Is it a tribute to 'Mayonaise'?" expressing his love for the song.
Live Version
A live version of "Mayonaise" was included on the band's compilation album "Pisces Iscariot," which was released in 1994 and peaked at number 4 on the US Billboard 200.
