"What's This Life For" is a song by American rock band Creed. It is the third single and ninth track off their 1997 debut album, My Own Prison. The song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the U. S., becoming their first #1 hit on this chart. It remained on top for six weeks. Vocalist Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti wrote the song about one of their friends who had committed suicide. The lyrics deal with the difficulties in finding happiness and meaning in the world. It is the only Creed song to use profanity. The first half of the word "goddamn" is censored on the 2004 Greatest Hits album. The song is also shorter than the album version on the Greatest Hits release. Creed

Creed is an American rock band, formed in 1995 in Tallahassee, Florida. The band consists of lead vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist and vocalist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips. Creed released two studio albums, My Own Prison in 1997 and Human Clay in 1999, before Marshall left the band in 2000 to be replaced by touring bassist Brett Hestla. The band's third record, Weathered, was released in 2001 with Mark Tremonti handling bass before the band disbanded in 2004 due to increasing tension between members. Tremonti, Phillips, and Marshall went on to found Alter Bridge while Stapp followed a solo career.
