About Hello America

"Hello America" is a 1980 song by the British rock band Def Leppard from their debut album, On Through the Night. The lyrics and title of the songs are about the fantasies the band had about touring in America. The single's B-side, “Good Morning Freedom” has only been released on cd in 2018 on the rareties volume one cd which was part of the CD Collection Part One boxset. The song was featured on a BBC studio session recorded in 1979 and the show has since been bootlegged. A live version of the song is also included on Viva! Hysteria, released in October 2013, although Def Leppard have all but disowned On Through the Night and “Hello America” was one of the first songs to leave the setlist, having never been played live since the release of High 'n' Dry. An alternate recording of the song “Hello America” appeared as a b-side on the “Wasted” single, also an alternate recording. Both were recorded a few months earlier than the main album sessions.

Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America

Well I'm takin' me a trip I'm going down to California
Yeah, I'm gonna try Hollywood and San Pedro Bay
I'll tell ya what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna give my love to you
I'm gonna take you where the lights are bright
I'm gonna give you my love tonight

Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America

I'm gonna get me a greyhound bus down the motorway
I'm gonna spend a little time in Frisco and L.A.
But when it gets to twelve o'clock
And you feel that you gotta rock
You'd better let your hair hang down
So we can boogie all over town

Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America

Takin' me a trip I'm going down to California
Yeah, I'm gonna try Hollywood and San Pedro Bay
I'll tell ya what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna give my love to you
So won't ya take me where the lights are bright
Won't you give me your love tonight

Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America
