About Shine On

"Shine On" is a song by Australian rock band Jet, and is the seventh track on their second album Shine On. The single was released as the third single from that album in and Australia on the 7 November 2006. A digital EP was released to the American iTunes Store in December 2006. It was subsequently released as a CD and 7" vinyl single in the UK on the 5 March 2007. The song was written by Nic to comfort his family after his father's death. He is quoted as saying: "It was inevitable I would write a song that dealt with all of that, but it was almost too big a subject for me to handle. Then I got a phone call from my mum saying everyone was depressed so I wrote the song through Dad's eyes, what he would say to help everyone through. We recorded it in one take, but it was emotional, very heavy. We couldn't be happier with this album." The title of the song is in homage to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", a similarly themed song by Pink Floyd. Similarly, the refrain of "Shine on, for everyone" is reminiscent of "Instant Karma!", a song by John Lennon.

Please don't cry
You know I'm leaving here tonight
Before I go I want you to know
There will always be a light

And if the moon had to runaway
And all the stars didn't wanna play
Don't waste the sun on a rainy day
The wind will soon blow it all away, yeah

So many times I planned
To be much more than who I am
And if I let you down
I will follow you 'round until you understand

That if the moon had to runaway
And all the stars didn't wanna play
Don't waste the sun on a rainy day
The wind will soon blow it all away, ya, oh ya

When the days all feel the same
Don't feel the cold or wind or rain
Everything will be okay
We will meet again one day

And I will shine on, for everyone

So please don't cry
Although I leave you here this night
Where I go, how far, I don't know
But I will always be your light

That if the moon had to runaway
And all the stars didn't wanna play
Don't waste the sun on a rainy day
The wind will soon blow it all away, yeah, oh, yeah

When the days all seem the same
Don't feel the cold or wind or rain
Everything will be okay
We will meet again one day
I will shine on, for everyone
Shine on, for everyone
When the stars all look the same
Don't feel the cold or wind or rain
Everything will be okay
We will meet again one day
I will shine on, for everyone
Shine on, for everyone.
