About Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer

"Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer" is a 1971 song by Stevie Wonder, featured on his album Where I'm Coming From. The song is a ballad, describing a failed relationship using the metaphor of changing seasons. Co-written by Syreeta Wright and released on Tamla 54202 in 1971 as the flip side of "We Can Work It Out", the single stalled at #78 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it remains one of Stevie Wonder's most popular ballads to this day. The song was covered by Joan Baez on her 1975 album Diamonds and Rust. It was also covered by Three Dog Night and included on their album Harmony. Phil Collins also recorded the song for his album of soul covers, Going Back. A large portion of the song is played during a scene in the film, Poetic Justice; the full song is on its accompanying soundtrack album. A portion of this song was also remade by Lauryn Hill on Hip-Hop artist Common's "Retrospect For Life," found on his 1997 album One Day It'll All Make Sense. Wonder performed a version of the song at Michael Jackson's memorial service on July 7, 2009, his voice cracking with emotion as he called out his friend's name during the song's final refrain, "Why didn't you stay?"

I never dreamed you'd leave in summer
I thought you'd go then come back home
I thought the cold would leave by summer
But my quiet nights will be spent alone

You said then you'd be warmed up in springtime
Oh, you said that is when you started to be cold
No, no
I never dreamed you'd leave in summer
But now I find myself all alone

You said then you'd be alive in autumn
Then you said you'd be the one to see the way
No, no, no, no, no
I never dreamed you'd leave in summer, oh
But now I find my love has gone away
Why didn't you stay?

I want to know why didn't you stay
Ah babe
Why didn't you, why didn't you
Why, I think I should know why didn't you stay
I think I should know why, why
Why didn't you stay?

Three Dog Night

Three Dog Night is an American rock band best known for their music from 1968 to 1975. This highly successful vocal-centric rock band formed in 1968 with a lineup consisting of Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron. The three lead singers were backed by Jimmy Greenspoon (organ), Joe Schermie (bass), Mike Allsup (guitar) and Floyd Sneed (drums). With their distinctive and sometimes extraordinary harmonic blend, the band registered an impressive 21 Billboard Top 40 hits (with three hitting number one) between 1969 and 1975. Their startling version of John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s ‘'It’s For You’' typified the band at their best, but it was their original arrangements of the work of lesser-known writers that brought welcome exposure and considerable royal… more »
