Thousands of years ago In the Garden of Eden Eve and Adam had an event If you believe that, fine and well But many others love to tell A different tale of how things actually went But either way the world began Whatever was the final plan Insanity is spreading Where exactly are we heading? So many tears have been cried So many hopes have crashed and died We've all got a ticket on this crazy ride That's something that can't be denied So lets all bid a fond farewell To Edison and Alexander Graham Bell To Garibaldi and William Tell Debbie Harry and Richard Hell Grandmaster Melle Mell Brothers Righteous, Walker, Doobie Lee Harvey Oswald shot by Jack Ruby But who really shot JFK? Man still trying to explore space While climate change continues apace Too many still think it'll be OK Mass poverty displayed on old newsreels Roosevelt developed his New Deal It made such a difference and how But are things much better now ? The USA plagued by mass shootings Ukraine invaded by Vladimir Putin Folk no longer go first footing That Hogmanay custom has long died So lets have a final dialogue About Yogi Bear and Deputy Dawg Sherlock Holmes and Phileas Fogg Planxty and Tir Na Nog Rishi and Jacob Rees Mogg Dr. Dre and Snoop Dawg Now for decades we've gone on our own way Ignoring the impending emergency We've very much been asleep at the wheel We've been so focussed on getting rich Too many wanting to scratch that particular itch Is it already too late for the world to heal? While the rest of the world turned away Too many tyrants have had their day Their infamous reputations well earned Lessons still unlearned And while Lennon returned from Central Park He came upon a fan called Mark Extinguished another creative spark The day his music died Lets say adios to Macca and the Boss Who said Rolling Stones gather no moss? Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross Duke Ellington and Joe Loss Bryan Adams and Christopher Cross Helter skelter some found no shelter From Charles Manson and his devoted helpers Labianca and Sharon Tait That fateful day at Altamount By a Hells Angel knife a spectator was downed Still no one held to account Another victim of fear and hate Who could ever forget the four minute mile Roger Bannister achieved it in style Its been broken so often since then We're in the age of supermen The world was ruled by the Fab Four For seven glorious years or more Never again see their like for sure So many classics they did pen Let's all say one last auf widersehen To Sean Connery and Michael Caine Meryl Streep and Shirley Maclaine Gary Cooper and John Wayne Charles Dickens and Mark Twain And there we were feeling quite smug Till the world was laid low by the Covid bug Lockdown was oh so strange Though many regimes crumbled fast The Arab spring didn't last Has anything really changed? And as we watched events unfold High hopes vanished, if truth be told Little then did we know All that remained was the status quo Revolution the people did incite For freedom the people they did fight Little change occurred, try as they might The pace of change goes slow Lets all sing Au Revoir To Ibiza and Lloret Del Mar To Aldis, Tescos, Asda and Spar Petrol, diesel and electric cars Restaurants, coffee shops and sports bars I met an acquaintance that I once knew We'd knock back one or two But he'd seen the error of his ways He'd been tee total ten years or more And now ran a health food store We both had nothing much to say And in the streets, homeless pleaded Government didn't provide what's needed A critical situation High prices, high inflation And the two men that most spring to my mind Michael Nesmith and John Prine Their legacies shimmer and shine Their music will never die So its very much see you, see you later To stocks and shares and speculators To social media influencers and facilitators I.T. consultants and content creators The world will be singing Bye bye, farewell and adieu To google, facebook, twitter, instagram and yahoo Will we return to the swamp and the goo? Very much up to me and you
