Pop star Laurie Maitland started listening to her father’s old records back in 1975. The first artist she heard was Jimmy Cliff. At the age of 2, she began her singing career at her house precociously. Her favorite popular disco records of the songs are “Dancing Queen” by Abba, “Dance, Dance, Dance”, performed by Chic, “Dance With Me” by Peter Brown, “Rock The Boat” by The Hues Corporation and “Don’t Leave Me This Way” by Thelma Houston, plus “Hot Shot” by Karen Young. She started taking piano lessons in 1980 at age 5 and then learned how to play it by ear at age 6. The reason why she loves real music is because it’s much better than synthesized music. When she plays and sings real music, it makes her feel so satisfied. In 1981 she co-wrote her first song as a gospel-inflected disco tune,“Reach Out And Touch Somebody Who Needs A Hand” with Elsie Natalie Brady, Nancy Watson Dodrill, Phil Galdston, Jud Friedman and Cynthia Weil, so she had to wait patiently 17 years later until she released that song on her second album, “Dreams”. In 1982, Maitland made her debut as a studio background vocalist singing backup at the age of 7 behind the male pop star, named, George Stewart on his mid-tempo disco-flavored pop cover version of “Could You Be Loved”, originally performed by the late reggae artist Bob Marley back in 1980. At the age of 9, she sang backup with Karen West (contralto) and Theresa Joanou (artificial high soprano) behind George Stewart on the full, complete pop version of “Don’t Take The Easy Way Out”, written by Larry Santos and Carole Bayer Sager for the “Purple Rain” soundtrack. She also sang pop duets with him back in 1985, on popular songs, like “Bluebird Of Happiness”, originally performed by Josh Perelmuth, better known as Jan Peerce, “Where You Are”, written by Larry Santos, Tom Snow & Cynthia Weil and a pop cover version of “Everything Is Beautiful”, written by Harold Ragsdale, better known as Ray Stevens, all recorded on Columbia/CBS Records.
