Gwynplaine

The Man Who Laughs (also published under the title By Order of the King from its subtitle in French) is a novel by Victor Hugo, originally published in April 1869 under the French title L'Homme qui rit. It takes place in England beginning in 1690 and extends into the early 18th century reign of Queen Anne. It depicts England's royalty and aristocracy of the time as cruel and power-hungry. Hugo intended parallels with the France of Louis-Philippe and the Régence. The novel concerns the life of a young nobleman, also known as Gwynplaine, disfigured as a child (on the orders of the king), who travels with his protector and companion, the vagabond philosopher Ursus, and Dea, the baby girl he rescues during a storm. It's there!
All the time!
Driving me out to
Wander the streets, following me
Silently but I can feel it
There!
It's me pursuing myself!

Sometimes in the early waking hours
I find the slight tinge of regret passes
Like a ship on the horizon fading
in the distance
A memory forgotten

The faulty promises of light
The dissonant night amidst dust upon the skin
I am always there
The hunger
Unsatiated ravenous elated
My fingers carressing the shadows to fufill my lust

Why?
Why this?
Affection pure betrayed by this nightmare?
Silence is the answer
To a question that was never asked

Something lies beneath familar skin
A desire
A truth crept in
A walking oblivion
Action keeps my hands from burning

Tell me after my head is chopped off
Will I still be able
To hear at least for a moment the sound of my own blood?
Tell me after my head is chopped off
Will I still be able
To hear at least for a moment the sound of my own blood?
Gushing from the stump?

When they finally bind my wrists tell them there's a lot you must have missed
My love a villain unto history you'll never be
Gather your resolve and calm your tears
Forgive me

Lost!
Everyone is lost!
There are no heroes when the lights are all turned off
Everything is gone
Everything you've ever loved now belongs to the dark

Sag, wenn mein Kopf abgeschlagen ist
Werde ich im letzten Moment das Blut aus meinem Hals
fließen hören können?
Das wäre eine Freude zum Ende aller Freuden!
