I have a story, a bit gory but dates back like a nineteenth century storey There was a young girl I could still see her face in the dark filled with enchantment and spark I could trace the fascination on her face As the voice of Frank Olize fills the room Never understanding the words he says But enjoying the fluency of his words resonate like the sounds of birds Enjoying the flawless hoarseness of his voice She watched as he read the news on NTA Newsline That young girl was fascinated with journalism A symbolism of a thriving career Here was a young girl with expectations that struggled With acceptation in the house all cos her dreams of becoming a broadcaster Will make her unsuitable for suitors "Ah broadcaster? Mabnu!" The voice of her mother reverberated from across the room Here was a young girl with dreams made to lose her self-esteem Taught to cower and shrink like she will soon be extinct Tutored to accept that society has no place for her Except in the kitchen and the other room Wanting more, she was afraid she will not be accepted anymore Accepting that a university education was only a decoration To the many yards of 'wife material' a woman is expected to be adorned with She waited for her admission and certification as a B.sc holder in the other room Here was a young woman who came to the realization That unlike what she was taught A new narrative has emerged for women across nations Brought by civilisation Fast forward to years down the line, I realize I am woman; I will not let myself get noticed because of my titties Hanging from my dress with no brain to handle the game of chess I am woman; I will not let myself get branded by society's definition Of beauty with big booties achieved by going under the knife I am woman; I can write compelling stories filled with glory That break to pieces barriers limiting women like Chimamanda Ngozi-adichie I am woman; I can thrive in broadcasting like clear career path like Funmi Iyanda I am woman; I can rule the finance sector as a director like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala I am woman; I can run the oil sector like an inspector Runs the police post like Adefunke Sharon Kasali I am woman; I can communicate and articulate my thoughts In a thousand languages through photography like TY Bello I am woman; I can fly international aircraft without witchcraft like Adeola Ogunmola I am woman; I can join these great female mentors To redefine success not as confessed by our mothers But as redefined as them. You have so much potential in you Which is existential to your moment of daring. If they can If I can Then you can DARE to become more Because we are women
