On the first day of sixth grade
I had never used a locker
Never done it by myself
The kid next to me had noticed
He offered me some help
I said "if you don't mind it, i need some help"
He said, "no i got you, i know how you felt"
He said "go right then left and back to the right
That's how you do it, so why don't you try?"
From that point on, his lesson still ain't left
I thanked him and then he just smiled and left
Though we were neighbors we never did speak
We saw each other each day of the week
First day, next year he stopped coming to school
They said "he's taught at home, i thought that's cool"
Our school was growing each day and i knew it
So why not give his locker to a new student?
I guess he's coming back, i started hoping
10 months later his locker still unopened
Eventually opening my locker was a habit
I don't need to picture him back when i had it
Then one morning before history started
Principle came in with his smile guarded
He said all of our questions will be answered
He told us my neighbor just lost to a cancer

I was in french, my entire tenth grade
I can't remember a word to this day
But i remember the girl sat behind me who
Always asked questions
Ten times a lesson
Thankful she did, she asked questions i wondered
If she didn't my grade probably would suffer
Wasn't certain of her face but i know her voice
Texture and tone that would danced in her poise
She won every review game that we played

If she missed a day, i'd barely take notes
Shivers on test day, it's tough to shake those
Suddenly her seat was empty for weeks
Maybe vacation, she's in soccer leagues
But rumors started to spread before school could announce it
I musta heard over a thousand
Then one day before our french class started
Madam Roache just spoke with her smile guarded
She told us the truth without a filter
She held her tears, her face turned bitter
After reciting some grief centered passages
She told us that the girl was in an accident
4 students driving drunk when the jeep overturned
She died on impact and her body burned

I woke up this morning to the same news
Thoughts and their prayers recited on cue
19 more kids will not come home for dinner
I remember when this made me feel bitter
Now i just scroll and move on with my day
Now i'm just numb and accept it won't change
Now i just watch as they argue the blame
Now i just wait for the next list of names
Now i just pray they can focus on tests
Now i just pray all my teachers can rest
Now i just pray my friend responds to texts
Now i just pray that my brother ain't next

Guess i was wrong, guess they need more
Better off if all the victims seems poor
My neighbor's a teacher she ain't worked in months
Her husband won't let her, "school's ain't safe enough"

Enough to ensure my family makes it home
