A Passage to India is a 1924 novel by English author E. M. Forster set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement in the 1920s. It was selected as one of the 100 great works of 20th century English literature by the Modern Library and won the 1924 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. A dirty lake
A robin's egg
A willow seed
That grows until it breaks
Is planted in
The garden of
The family and the snake
Swim
As if your lungs were made of gold
As if your life depends upon it
Swim
For the sake of all your sons and daughters
Because they are the ones you love
In the clutch of evergreens
I heard a hymn
Coming from atop the trees
Can it be time to leave
Or are birds playing tricks on me?
But not this time
You'll survive
And by God, I'll get to say goodbye
Swim
As if your lungs were made of gold
As if your life depends upon it
Swim
For the sake of all your sons and daughters
Because they are the ones you love
Try not to speak
Your words are weeds and you're a bird
Atop the trees
And cue the rain to wash away
The lasting scent
So decompose
Under the ground
In forty years
I'll meet you there
Don't you ever frighten me like that again
I know you're getting pretty God damn tired
Swim
As if your lungs were made of gold
Because your life depends upon it
Swim
For the sake of all your sons and daughters
Because they are the ones you love
