Well I left my home in Macon
And hopped the train on up to Lumpkin
To work outside the union so my pay would be next to nothing
Left Ruby Rae at home
She holds my heart she holds my soul
That woman is true to me, despite what I've been told

I'm just getting by
Down at the End of the Line
Take that load off of my back
Keep Georgia on my mind
Worked my fingers to the bone
Waiting on that train to take me home
And I sure believe I have enjoyed my stay

Woke up at the Terminal
Left for that job down at the rollin mill
Spent my only dollar bill so I slept on the floor
Just down the road from Oakland
Where my daddy's set to lay
Laid the iron down that evening, laid him down the next day

I'm just getting by
Down at the End of the Line
Take that load off of my back
Keep Georgia on my mind
Worked my fingers to the bone
Waiting on that train to take me home
And I sure believe I have enjoyed my stay

Took every single paycheck and mailed them all to Macon
With letters to dear Ruby
love songs - records of my stay
Worked that mill down to the ground
In hopes I'd soon move out
And build that house we talked about
Oh that would be the day

Ruby saved all those paychecks and we built that home out in the country

Both buried out in Oakland
Where I will be some day
