In '58, wed Lucretia, and had seven children
In '61, a lawyer, then Ohio state senator
And also served as a Union general in the Civil War

In '62, Lincoln said James should become a rep
There, he served for 18 years, until his party's next step
They nominated him president, in '81, he won
James fought corruption, for civil rights and education
But Charles Guiteau was refused a job, so he cast blame
On James Garfield and felt his death would give him fame

July 2nd, at a train station, Guiteau aimed and fired
James was helped home, unclean fingers probed, and then retired
It wasn't till September 19, '81 that he died
The next year, Guiteau was hung, after he was tried
James' legacy was giving people honest government
He also showed that even the poor could become president
