My dad used to work third shift when I was in third grade
Still came to most of my games
I found a picture of my classroom from that year
Cooper Elementary
I still remember most of they names
My dad used to work a side gig at the funeral home
I'd always go cause I was too young to be left alone
Can't remember when he started I might have been six
I've seen more dead bodies than I would like to admit
I learned early live ya life
This is all we get
Stop playin with mine
Write goals, think ahead
Take one day at a time
Don't get mad and lash out quick
You won't need pockets in your last outfit
I know money isn't all there is
I see how you moving funny after all these years
My dad taught me not to bite my peers
My dad taught me every now and then to bite my tongue
My dads story here has just begun
I made the album this part of it wasn't even fun
I'm bout to tell you what they told me back when I was young
They used to call me
Larry's Son
Where I'm from
They used to call me
Larry's Son
This story felt completely unrelated
But needs to be stated
Why we actin like nobody racist
My dad grew up in Johnston County with segregation
His freshman year of High School was when they integrated
I got a lot to say
My dad got his house shot up by the KKK
Why we actin like nobody fake
When half the people over 70 and 80 called us nigga daily
I knew Trump and Biden wouldn't save me
Ain't a form of reparation you could even pay me
I'm only fourth generation from slavery
Dad had me at 38
His grandad was born in 1903
I did the math and Biden might owe me
Cause 1865 really ain't that far
I'm seeing how we got it now it ain't that hard
We used to run at night had to follow a star
And now we run at night to the club and the bar
When bottle service comin we ain't working tomorrow
My grandad didn't have to work that hard
Compared to them we blessed just to be in the rat race
My grandad was really round with niggas in blackface
Used to work the fields on the farm
My dad too
Primed tobacco over the summer they had to
It wasn't a joke
Nowadays we complain and working remote
They would die to hit the polls you don't even vote
Shorties die to hit the poles
Niggas sellin dope
I left the altar call
Said the preacher sellin hope
I read the Bible for myself
Now I'm getting old
Then I started paying tithes
Now I'm making more
Then I gave it all to God
And he took control
Then he take it off my mind
I can let it go
I leave it on the pad
When I let you know
They used to call me Larry's Son
Now I'm grown
