He attended New York's Union College, and loved to debate
He taught school part-time and in '48, would graduate
Chester studying law while teaching full time at a school
By '54, a lawyer on whose cases judges rule

In '56, Chester met Ellen, '59, they married
They had three children, though, sadly, their first, at two years, buried
He served as a Quartermaster in the Civil War, was great
Then, Grant had him head the New York Port Customs until '78
In '80, Ellen, Nell, Chester's wife, died, unexpected
He was chosen as Garfield's VP, Garfield was elected

Chester Arthur, the 21st U.S. President
With integrity was how he lived and worked in government

An assassin's bullet killed Garfield, Chester, Prez in '81
He changed from his partisan slant, and battled corruption
He pushed for hiring based on merit instead of who you know
And tried to reduce tariffs, but Congress wouldn't let them go
Chester fought U.S. Postal Service fraud, the courts addressed
And worked to modernize the U.S. Navy as the best

Chester fell ill and made a small effort to run again
He lost, then, he returned to his home and the memories of Ellen
For four years, acute kidney disease threatened Chester's life
November 18th, '86, he was laid next to his wife
His legacy was his life was run by rules numbering three
He kept his word, was un-corrupted, and maintained dignity
