The family moved west from Texas
When Grandma was two years old
With title to a Spanish land grant ranch
That used to be part of Mexico
It was far enough away from the river
To have the water without the floods
It lasted alnost three generations
Before its time had come

The Irrigation District came that day
To make good on its demands
My uncle had no money to pay
Just the deed to our last piece of land
Most moved west to the Valley
Some made it to the higher ground
I stayed, and took a job in the copper mine
And a seat at the bar in town

I played out my days in small town ways
With a couple of wives and two sons
I never had to worry often
