This is only part a poem It is other part a thesis A part of the ceaseless babble and conclusions of my mind I find people Should be more like Atoms Not the Lambert kind The standard stuff you find when you cut the universe up I know it sounds strange But hear me out Without oversimplifying an entire physics lesson May I point your attention to the election cloud It's the humming bustling region around an atom's center You could imagine it a handful of sand dancing in a blender A space so jammed full of small grains You have to wonder at the pain in all that grit You begin to suspect that things hit each other Here is an electron fact Electrons move so fast you can never tell where they are As far as scientists are concerned An electron can be in two or more places at once Everywhere and nowhere and sleeping and out to lunch I find people should be more like atoms Circling some common thing But emulating atomic abundance I think we have to make less choices Can admit to life being bustling and confusing and noisy This is also a poem about public space How we should inhabit places And squabble and bicker and have bad nights Not shy away from living room and dinner table fights Or the chance that two or more of us just might overlap And that is not a bad thing or against nature In fact it is our behavior at the smallest scale Both, and, Or Is our most fundamental state How then is this the world we have created? Full of hemming and haws and limits A world at odds with the laws pf physics Like... what the hell are manners? Why are we so surgical about grammar? Following the "shrink, shrink, shrink" demanders This is how the silverware sits That is how a bodice fits Here is where a good girl goes There is where we plant the roses It's not appropriate to talk so loud Don't interact when the sidewalk is crowded We live our lives like a packed box truck Heaviest on bottom and everyone stuck in shape Ignoring how much of the world Is in a liquid, gas, plasma state I am not saying we can't have boundaries I'm saying it's silly to assume they won't be used That grandly dictated rules will do all the work That the clerk at the court will be able to make it make sense That you will never personally be tasked with defense Or mending fences And if you are offended you will simply call the cops Send packing the electronic people Humming and spinning about the block Make the movement stop Do everything you can to avoid fiction Try to become that quiet fiction loathed by Dr. King A heavy, toxic, obnoxious thing Negative Peace A position ion Brutally achieved by rejecting electrons The physics on that is strong Such a time will be brief We cannot fully be By rejecting people Or parts of ourselves We cannot create heaven by packing full the jail cells Manners will not do the trick You cannot hope to stick everyone's moving parts My evidence is millennia of Laughing, thrashing, human hearts It's not a surprise that western culture runs cold Does it not thrive off the preordained limits Of the white, the male, the old A worship of power devoid of soul It is true there is as little as powerful as a black hole And sad the most apt cosmic comparison Is the thing that sucks, and swallows, and takes And holds and holds and holds And won't let go The thing that crushes electrons, and snatches light That baffles scientists and can support no life I know there are better models for which we can aspire Which is to say I admire people That are like atoms Moving and wild and catching fire Dancing round each other like electron spirals Like planets Galaxies The rings of Saturn Living a holy, universe practices pattern That allows change and fullness but is hard That forfeits black hole power but leaves us stars This is my theory about public space Take it up Everyone All at once Be done With "shrink, shrink, shrink" demands Command the full sidewalk There's enough, enough, enough to go around We can all behave like an electron cloud We should commit to friction, the electronic and all that Because it is physically fine to overlap Preferred Even I believe in stuff that learns from its pieces I have this truly incredible thesis I find people Should be more like Atoms
