I was planted in the dark
Was watered by the rain
Sloughing off from the bark of my neighbours
I pushed outside my shell
And ate up all the dirt that would stop me
From reaching the sun
Naked and trembling, I learned how it works:
The tallest and biggest will always feed first
I lapped up the leavings and whispered through leaves
"One day, I'll grow up like you"
I learned to thread my roots
Learned the warp and weft
Tightened my grip on them slowly
I learned to be a leech
To drink the elders dry
Serves them right,
Thought they'd steal all my sunlight
Fragile and dying, they learned how it works:

Out of the woodwork, and in on the breeze
Grow up to look just like you
I fought my way to life
I grew to love the dark
Hiding my shoots, blooming strangely
I have counted every breath
Watched your every step
Someday I will taste the sunlight
Skin cinched like hand-me-down clothes, I convulse
I'll stop your heartbeat to feel my own pulse
Stretching my nerves out for warmth within reach
Waiting to feel something new
