Stop and ask, am I not your fellow man? Born and raised on the streets where America's first motors ran Same streets where race riots and innocent blood ran City ravaged by white flight, followed by mass blight Son of Egyptian parents born with a chance to take flight Left the Nile, for Motown to build America right No denial, with a strange name and appearance Born indifferent to the differences between US A faith made notorious, too quickly prosperous Just too religious, don't I fit among us Celebrate those of us who build and innovate in the US Who dares to question our loyalty and status Because we came to educate and create business So industrious and save lives in the US Filtered through a lens, our heroes must be cleansed, to be like us Tirelessly buzzing labels of thugs and terrorists They pray to define us Without bias, pray the pious Patriots Actin' to spy on us Don't let your faith be conspicuous Dare to speak truth to power They preach hate to empower Many weak, shake and cower The factions of US that hates to change They don't know or understand why we act so strange Demands to assimilate and speak like US Or un-American aspersions shall get cast Forgetting your past, you are doomed to repeat the sins of the past Imperialist strategy to manipulate us Deployed by various actors A domestic and global stage with multiple factors Divide and conquer us Protracted conflicts from Flint to Damascus A battle over values the liberators sold us Secret caches of nuclear weapons they told us Sold sovereignty abroad, just preposterous, Bank rolled with defense budgets prodigious Neocons run offense with schemes so salacious Rulers folded, its superfluous Fools molded, let them control us Cruel police, patrol with a focus Tools like mass incarceration Racial and class exploitation Like a new version of Jim Crow Subtler, still deadly but you won't know Allows us to get paid and make buckets like Abdul-Rauf Until you don't stand in line, get canceled, Mahmoud's livin proof How much damage is done By those sworn to serve and protect Corruption with a badge and a gun Shoot first, create excuses later Some of our blood it doesn't even matter Like clockwork, cops commit crime News broadcasts louder than a mime Time after time, like Earvin drops dimes Transforming narratives like Optimus Prime Forgetting victims like they on a slave ship Ship them off to prison like Amazon Prime No suspect, just arrest and inspect Plant to fabricate, like Magic, it's Showtime A system of laws, juries and judges that don't protect Incredulous and angry, feel like an insect A modern day caste system singles you out Until one day it catches you, wonder what's it about It's time to wake up these polarized masses Of easily herded elephants and asses it's like a Jedi mind trick How our officials politic Congressional gridlock, it won't stop Lobbyists and kingpins control the shop Controlled from the top Inflationary bubble it won't pop Medical bills and tuition costs won't drop Economic flop, more war bombs drop Draft more dropouts, we'll send in the troops Hittin foreign ground with more boots Time to dig deeper into our grass roots A real movement to shake up spineless elected suits Only when cruelty hits home will an epiphany flow From your heart to your mind Wiping layers of fearful hate, turns your soul kind Unwind the strands of prejudice driving you blind A mercy to mankind you would surely find Open your eyes to see a more holistic picture A message perfectly played by our walking scripture I ain't preaching but for the sake of teaching Uncovering truth lost in our universal history We all search for purpose in a life twisted in mystery It takes the whole of us to make the U.S. the place to be Not a slogan on a red hat, peddled like crack Time for America to take its integrity back Remember, we hold these truths to be self evident Can't make fake news, into truths not even the president A duty to wake up and resist the crimes around us The trajectory of our path veers too perilous A united vision for our states seems too miraculous Time to release US from arrogance and bigotry Time to embrace us with empathy and humility Vote for righteousness, hold to account those who oppress US A living, breathing Constitution, such genius...a true American hero It cannot judge us, or tell us to stay silent, go back from whence we came For some, equal rights were earned by fighting this rigged game What if power came to someone with a foreign name What of our freedom, our rights and values...will they ever be the same Time to understand America's true heroes they come and rise Not just from wearing a flag or pledging loyalty with no compromise Not from fake celebrity or having the right ancestry But from those who sacrificed to breakdown evil hypocrisy To ascend to a standard of shared human values, steeped in sincerity Learn from the American heroes who rose up for their dignity Demanding and sacrificing by any means necessary To bravely reject our static condition To continue the pursuit with equal ambition To power, wealth and education Struggle to establish a more just nation
