No, I never been a hero But I've been to Omaha Went way out west to try and do my best I didn't get too far That crack in the blinds doesn't tell any lies So when she pulled up at a quarter to five I could see right away by the look in her eye That tonight was gonna be a long one I was playing piano in a flea market chair When she breezed through the door with a breath of cool air Grabbed a piece of my heart and started to tear So I broke into 'Hey Good Lookin' In that little green dress she did look good But my heart's like a stone carved out of wood And nothing I said was something I should So she packed up her things, she was leaving Said it was for good this time too Left me leaning on the fridge by the skin of my teeth With a bottle of bread rolling round at my feet Wishing I was dead or at least I could sleep Then my mind got to burning like diesel So with nothing to lose and no reason to laugh I put all of my money on one tank of gas Spent the rest of my night watching little towns pass By morning I was halfway to Cleveland There's worse places to be Like in my shoes, for instance No, I never been a hero But I've been to Omaha Went way out west to try and do my best I didn't get too far Wasted my time and money All I got to show for the tread I burned Is a head full of half true stories And a lesson I'll never learn Cleveland came and went, for better or worse But I broke down in Erie and started to curse Man, I was looking like something that fell off a hearse Half-dead, and not to mention freezing The dang ol' wind was like a doggone train Thought I'd run out of luck when it started to rain But somebody pulled up in an old Ford Ranger Who looked like the friend that I needed Well, she told me her name, but I'd seen her before Was that same pretty girl who had walked out the door So as that sweet Detroit engine started to roar I couldn't help myself, I started singing No, I never been a hero But I've been to Omaha Went way out west to try and do my best I didn't get too far Wasted my time and money All I got to show for the tread I burned Is a head full of half true stories And a lesson I'll never learn
