To all the roadkill on our streets

We don't get to choose who will live or die

One thing that's true

A body left to rot and stink on a road with no respect
Is a fate that's suffered worse than death
It's just humiliation

To the skunk, the two raccoons, the fawn, and the orange cat
I see you, and I'm sorry
For the place that we're at
A place so full of wooden havens
Dissected by busy roads
A culture full of unconscious behavior
Empowered with so much control

We drive too fast
We cut too deep
We think the Earth is ours to keep
We call these brains our destiny
Divinely bestowed in a hierarchy
But we're wrong in this belief
We are a species in infancy

I defer
To the best of my ability
To ants and plants
To fungi and trees
To wind and fire
To birds and bees
To water and sand
To soil and peat
To vines and lichen
All creatures I meet

I don't get to choose
Who lives or dies
But I can drive as the turkey vulture flies
Ever with a watchful eye
To the life-force squandered at the roadside
Saving carrion eaters from premature demise
Risking their lives for a meal between speeding drivers

Other humans stop for me
Damsel in distress? What a beauty
Need a ride, baby? Hey, mami
Why, thank you, gentlemen
You're mighty kind
I'd be happy to borrow your muscles for a time
Put on these gloves, and grab this shovel
Prepare your nose, for there might be trouble
You see this bag inside this box
I prepared it to transport this fox
That body there behind my car
Their part of our community, not from afar
Where I'm from, we honor our dead so bodies can inter
And spirits can be led where spirits go
Back to The Soulstream, where I'll go
