Four barrel engine on a V-eight road
And with everything we need it seems a heavy load
To have to tote a quarter mile all up on my back
And find I might as well be sleeping by the railroad track, yeah

Well at the crack of dawn we pack up and leave
Behind the loudmouth hippies, and I'm so relieved
To be out and driving north to I don't know where
And I don't know why, and I really don't care

I've been driving all day up Highway One
Won't get a lick of sleep when the driving's done
What have I got to lose, the California blues

Standing in South San Francisco on a cold summer night
Trying to find a room before the dawn's early light
I used up every bit of change beneath the passenger seat
And I finally found a room up on Lombard Street, yeah

Well up early in the morning, wanting something to eat
We see a little house of pancakes just a block down the street
Pack up and get rolling as the dawn cuts the dark
And around about noon we finally find a place to park

Well I've been driving all day up Highway One
Won't get a lick of sleep when the driving's done
What have I got to lose, the California blues

Just trying to find the bridge, but the traffic's delayed
Because it happens to be the weekend of the Pride Parade
And so we sneak through Chinatown and roll across the bay
And when the sun's on the horizon, home is ten miles away

What have I got to lose
From Crescent City to the Tijuana Slough
I've got to live somewhere, and so I choose
The California blues
