I've been lost and cold and lonely in the blackest stormy night
I've seen myself so frightened that it damn near turned me white
I've been turning green with envy, I've been burning red with rage
I've been trapped just like a songbird in a golden metal cage
I've been scarlet with a fever, a pink rose without a thorn
I've been yellow as a coward, gray and gloomy when I mourn
So of all the different colors that you know I've ever had
I'm beginning to suspect right now that blue just ain't so bad

Now I sure ain't feelin' groovy when I'm sportin' that tie dye
And them horizontal stripes here are about to make me cry
Don't cover me in checkers, even though I'm feeling board
And that ditzy tile print, it's just really got me floored
Don't wrap me up in harlequin, ain't lookin' like a clown
I can't see myself in camo, and that chintz has got me down
And don't you dare come near me with that paisley or that plaid,
Just put my ass in old blue jeans, you know they ain't so bad.

Now red's good luck in Shanghai but in Cape Town it is mourning
And orange is warm and fuzzy but it sometimes sends a warning
And white might be a wedding, but it could mean someone died
And brown is nice and earthy but it also tans your hide
Now green is eco-friendly 'less it's talkin' 'bout that money
And yellow is all cheerful but its fever ain't so sunny
And purple may be regal or a bruise that I once had
So I'm getting' the impression now that blue just ain't so bad

I can lay down in green pastures with a lover or a friend
And I pine for golden wheat fields and the waves that never end
Brown hills and purple mountains as they rise above the plain
Are only made more heavenly when touched by silver rain
I love the pale white moon that sits against a jet-black sky
And the red and yellow sunsets they can always make me sigh
But the lakes and skies and oceans are what truly make me glad
'Cos I'm getting' me a feelin' now that blue just ain't so bad

Now UV waves will fry you, cosmic rays will do it too
Infra-red will also burn you, and those x-rays go right through
So let me have a rainbow with its colors that are true
And if I can only have just one it might as well be blue

And when we're up in Cleveland it's for rock and not the reds
In NOLA ain't no oranges 'cos they named it jazz insteads
And Beantown don't got yellows as they're playin' them some pop
And Motown ain't got greens now if they're dancin' that hip hop
Atlanta don't say indigos when talking 'bout the funk
Nor London calling violets when they're discussin' punk
But when I go to Memphis and I strut my stuff on Beale
The folks down there all sing the Blues 'cos that's just how we feel

So I may not be the only one who isn't getting' sad
'Cos I feel it in my heart and soul that blue just ain't so bad
