We were on a road trip when I was three
We were headed towards Gatlinburg, Tennessee
When my mother handed a peppermint candy to me
It was pinwheel red and white

So I took the candy and I let it float
In the back of my mouth like a sugar/mint boat
Until it became jagged and it then it fell down my throat
Locked in place and sealed it tight

So I did what anybody would do
I signaled my father, he saw I was blue
And he hesitated for just a second or two
Yeah, it rare to hear him swear

Where he hugged at my torso in the way we're all taught
And sent a pinwheel in the air
