Zen is an oriental art centuries old
It has many facets, including control of the mind
To attempt a complete explanation here would be impossible
I will, however, attempt to teach you that part of Zen which is most applicable to self-defense

You must control your mind in an emergency
When you are face to face with your assailant, you must not anticipate his movements
You must empty your mind
Let us suppose you anticipate that he will attempt to strangle you

You are now in your mind devising an escape from that stranglehold
If he then attempts to hit you with his right hand instead
Your mind must first rid itself of the stranglehold defense
Before it can defend against the right hand blow

If your mind is not preoccupied, however
Your defense against that right hand blow would have been much quicker
Your mind would have had nothing to do but to react immediately
Here is an analogy

The law of self-defense states that a person may defend himself or his family
From assault or unlawful attack by the use of force
Provided he uses no more force than is necessary to accomplish that result

In addition, he may not carry his forcible resistance to the point of taking life
When he may safely retreat from his assailant
Except when he is in his own home
He may then forcibly resist attacks upon himself and other inmates of the dwelling

And, without retreating, kill his assailant if necessary to repel the attack
