We all know the police detect, prevent, and investigate crime
But there's a special branch of the police force that not everyone knows about
An undercover society of citizens, cleaners and probably your next door neighbour
Grouped together to prevent civil disorder
The self-appointed, self-empowered, self-legitimised special constables of privately owned public spaces
The Bathroom Police

They are an endemic, and those who are gender non-conforming like me are collateral damage
An incidental result of an irrational fear of their group march to protect tiled facilities
A human rights violation born out of the need to challenge the rights of transgender people using single sex spaces
And now even less of us are safe
from the undue brutality of The Bathroom Police

The unsung heroes that will jump in front of you as you walk into the loo
Who will tap you on the shoulder and broadcast "excuse me, do you know this is the women's"
Loud enough so all of those around them will listen
A recruitment campaign rallying the support of those who have not yet joined the force
Join us and you too can be the difference

Making something as simple as going to the toilet require military-like planning
Waiting for a gap, a space in the crowd so that I can sneak in, undetected by enemies
But when it's busy, there's a change in tactic a developing response, a switch in strategy
I take off my jumper to make my breasts more visible or bring along a female friend in an unspoken attempt to corroborate my identity

When challenged, apologise and tell me they thought I was just a pretty boy
Because their mental schema does not allow them to deviate from an antiquated definition of what a woman should look like
Unless of course you're talking about Halle Berry, Victoria Beckham, Frankie Bridge or Demi Moore in Ghost
Whose pixie cuts cast a spell over everyone they see but the same hairs on my head are black magic, an invocation of evil

So don't you see, without heterosexual privilege gender neutral bathrooms are a sanctuary for women like me who want to pee in peace
Whether it's in supermarkets, service stations shopping malls or stalls built into public streets
Because I hate to say it, but evading The Bathroom Police will forever be an extreme sport
When the length of your hair is cancelled out by the length of your skirt
