The Gypsy Prince's son was Johnny
He was bloody good with money
In the way hard men aren't smart men
But they seem to have that knack
Spent his youth down by the races
And in other desperate places
Helping rich men part with payslips
On the prayer they'd get it back

Down in Flea Street he first met her
He'd been told about Rebecca
She's got the eyes that see through lies
They said and fire in her blood
Never cared for dainty dresses
Spends her days in orphanages
Swapped the silk sheets of her family
For working in the mud

Spends her evenings in the king's head
Sipping gin, tonic and lime
In a drunken slur
Johnny says, my love, you should unwind

On a bed as fine as mine
She says, you can buy all kinds of shoes
But you can't only wear two
Yours might be the finest leather

But they don't look good on you
Those gold rings made for the suffering
Of many men I knew
What will you do

To all of their young boys who lost to you
It hadn't scared her in the slightest
This the only thing he noticed
He'd seen fear on every woman's face
He'd spoken to or kissed
She thought his own, went red with anger
But the boys, they all knew better
No one saw him for three days and nights
Till he comes back less well-dressed

Puts a sober arm before her
She lets him gently shake her hand
Rolls her eyes before he says
You are braver than any man
To tell me who I am

You can buy all kinds of shoes
Today I've bought quite a few
For the kids in Flea Street Halfway House
I did that for you
I can't promise that more honest men
Will love the work I do
But my gold rings were sold
To buy one just for you

Two months later at the wedding
For a cheap one she'd been begging
But her father and her Johnny
Both fought hard to spend the most
Still she put her best foot forward
In the heels that they had bought her
As she walked that white dress down the aisle
She felt just like a ghost

She screamed, what is it with your money
Has it ever made you happy
Why do rich men try to own me
With the gold that they collect
I told the coppers you would be here
You're still profiting from fear
Before you tell me that you love me
Johnny, show me some respect

Sergeant lee burst in the chapel
Fifteen policemen right behind
Says Johnny, finally you're mine
And as they walk up to the alter
Johnny looks her in the eyes

You can buy all kinds of shoes
But you can only wear two
They're coming for me
So the pair I'm wearing have to do
They've got to run and they will not come back
Not back to you
Rebecca, how could you be so cruel
I'd kill you if I had the time to lose

Two years pass, Rebecca's working
Flea street children's shoes she's fixing
Seems like everything gains holes
No matter how strong it might start
She heard that Johnny had been living
Like his gypsy dad before him
Hunting rabbits in the forest
And sleeping beneath the stars

Amongst the queue of shoes before her
In walks a pair she knows quite well
She looks up to see the battered, ragged clothes
And mucky face of John himself

You can buy all kinds of shoes
But you can only wear two
I followed where mine wandered
And they came right back to you
you were long in my letters
Before my tattoos
And all that I had left is love for you
That'll have to do
