Bought my first guitar
And learned how to play it
It must have been way back
When I was just thirteen
Then I joined a brand new band
With a few of my friends
And we started to build
Our very own little scene

So many of us were called
but so few were chosen
To that glamorous life
Of all those rock and roll stars
But that never mattered as much
To a single one of us
As playing and hearing
The sounds of these guitars

The sounds of these guitars
We heard 'em in an arena
And just hangin' out in a bar
They might be played by some old guys
Or sexy young things
And sometimes our favorite stars
Nothing else can compare to
The sounds of these guitars

But then I grew up, and all
Those rock star dreams faded
For the next twenty years
I was buildin' a life that was good
Please believe me when I say
I'm not complaining
There's not a lot I would change about it
If I could

But through all those years
I still heard that music
I'll bet maybe you did too
Whoever you are
And all those songs I'd hear
Kept ringin' in my ears
Way up loud, with
The sounds of these guitars

Playin' out of the speakers we own
In our homes and our cars
We might be wearing our headphones
Alone in our room
Or hearing 'em live where we are
Nothing else makes me feel like
The sounds of these guitars

So many things have changed
While some stayed the same
And another thirty long years
Have gone by
You might think that I'm too old
To play rock'n'roll now
But I'm not ready to give it up yet
'Cause I'm too young to die

I might be showing signs of age
And some wear and tear now
I've paid enough dues
And yeah, I do have my scars
But as long as I'm still around
And there's music to be found
I'll be listenin' to
The sounds of these guitars

They can be soft or loud, up close
Or heard from afar
With the bass and the drums
And the voices and keys
And lyrics from Venus and Mars
