From a market town, we both came
Wilfred Owen is my name
I wrote my poems so people could see
That war is just insanity
We lost some battles
But we won the war
I didn't know what I was fighting for
Freedom and peace, the prizes to be won
Or fame and glory for the one

The politicians, they talk all night
Making plans to put things right
Religion, politics, power and greed, this is all that they need
They fuel the fire that burns so bright
The devil rules the world tonight

Let me tell you what I saw
When they sent me off to war
Bodies lying by my side
Men committing suicide
Children on their dead mother's breast
Pain and death at its best

From a market town, we both came
Harold Whitfield is my name
A Victoria Cross was awarded to me, to honour my bravery
I captured a lewis gun in the Eygiptian sun
killed three men
On that day a battle was won

Let me tell you what I saw
When they sent me off to war
Bodies lying by my side
Men committing suicide
Children on their dead mother's breast
Pain and death at its best

The politicians, they talk all night
Making plans to put things right
Religion, politics, power and greed, this is all that they need
They fuel the fire that burns so bright
The devil rules the world today
Doesn't matter what we say

From the same market town, I've been sent
Just 19, my youth not yet spent
I'm told the war is to be won
To protect my wife and my son
My name is not important to you
I just have a duty to do

Let me tell you what I see
Whilst the men of power crave victory
Bodies lying by my side
Men committing suicide
The fields are red, the bodies piled high
I feel that I'm here to die

But this brain of mine can't let me think
Of anything to do with drink
Alcohol and tablets too
They all stand in the queue
To ease the pain and drown the screams
Turn my nightmares into dreams

Will I return to the market town
Where I had laid my roots down
Or will my story be told to all
By a bright blue plaque on a wall
