Perhaps they are always with me, invisible by day, silent in the noise
Perhaps each of them are here to show me things
Regret, mistakes, the voices of the dead, all the unanswered questions
The anger of those I have hurt, the embarrassment of events long gone
Unearthing things I thought were gone
And they stay and they wait, and patiently do their work

And as a murder, their pecks become a percussive landscape

Time is passing, and they will never leave
They are just doing as their nature insists

Marking time
Waiting, content

They are my pets, and they are part of who I am
With me every day til my last
