Fossils

I found a few of your things here That you must have forgot It was piled away into a corner It wasn't a lot Just a candle, an old T-shirt and couple CDs I found this polaroid picture that you took of your feet It's a past I never really think about It seems so out of reach Do you wonder what happened Or just never look back? Those times are fossils in the ground so long That they've turned to sand and You could dig up the pieces for clues to our past Try to take them all the way they never come out intact Tonight I'll through this stuff again and say 'Tomorrow I'll go ahead and throw it all away' But then again I trick myself Into thinking maybe someday ... And I've got the shelf space anyway The fossil record from those years Is mostly buried from view The layers: time, a little distance, and relationships too All I have are these relics Yeah they're all I've got While I don't dig 'em up that often I think of them a lot Tonight I'll through this stuff again and say 'Tomorrow I'll go ahead and throw it all away' But then I trick myself again Into thinking maybe someday ... And I've got the shelf space anyway And you give yourself away
