It was Saturday night and the light of the moon
Came splashing down through the treetops
When out in the garden I heard a faint tune
And I snuck up through the wet dewdrops
I could hardly believe what my eyes were seeing
As I hid behind the tomatoes
With a beanstalk of fireflies to light the scene
They danced among the potatoes
The little people were out for fun
Everyone dressed bright as Smarties
Celebrating a job well done

I had heard it before from my Uncle Pete
Though I almost couldn't remember
How the little folk danced when the corn was sweet
Neat the Harvest Moon in September
I began to remember the songs he had sung
And the stories that he used to relate
And how Mom used to dress me to play in the sun
And I recognized some of my playmates
The little people were out for fun

I saw Sunflower Joe play the string bean bass
Old Houlihan wore a green beanie
By the dewdrop pool, neat the red-toed stool
June Tiny wore a bikini
There was Hector the Spider on roller skates
Tim Fancy playing a hoedown
Frisky chipmunks and slippery snakes
And Centipedes feeling low down
The little people were out for fun
Everyone dressed bright as Smarties
Celebrating a job well done

I watched quite a while from behind the leaves
And I wanted to laugh at the elves
I knew that my parents would never believe
Unless they saw it themselves
So I crawled to the house just as soft as a mouse
With my jeans all wet from the dewdrops
Hey Dad and Mom, come and see all the fun
But hurry up for the dew stops
The little people were out for fun

But when we got there, everybody had gone
