I drive the roads that take me home
The lonely way to where I'm from
Past autumn fields and walls of stone
These ancient places I once roamed

Through sleeping towns with shuttered stores
Monuments to dreams that are no more
The ivy'd silos guard the land I knew before
Idle plows melt into barren soil

You can't make a living
Working farm land these days
A way of life is dying
Taking towns along the way

There's my old school they closed it down
Children ride a bus to nearby towns
Half of all my family is sleeping 'neath that hill
Their ghosts watch over our town still

We moved away ten years ago
They moved the plant to Mexico
Now all that's left are growing old
They can't abandon all they know

You can't make a living
Working farm land these days
A way of life is dying
Taking/killing towns along the way

I'll miss the people and
the places I once lived
Maybe I'll return some day
To rest beneath the hill
