We would like to tell you a story Late one night, we were walking somewhere on the outskirts of the city A strong wind blew us onto an unfamiliar path As our eyes adjusted to the dim light, we realized that we were not alone A crowd of other ordinary people seemed to be walking towards the woods As if drawn by some mysterious gravity Or as if they were participating in some secret procession From the trees, voices beckoned to us Komdu með, inn í skóg, eltu mig Curiosity compelled us to investigate As we strode beneath the cover of the trees, the darkness deepened The sky, both overcast and moonless, offered no guidance We followed the rustle of each other's footsteps and the whispers of the leaves At last we arrived at a clearing There was a great bonfire at its center, which was surrounded by people dancing and drinking A ceremonial vessel was being passed between clasped hands and pursed lips Participants shed clothing, inhibitions, artifacts of their personal constructs Their bodies bent with the rhythm of the music and the undulations of the flames As if possessed by sacred totems, unbound within this sacred space The priestesses beckoned us closer And we beheld the beauty of their ambulation Not unlike the swirling descent of pedals into an endless pit We stared into the flames and observed all kinds of things burning Skyscrapers, rainforests, department stores, drilling rigs, combines with their harvests Insects with their elaborate nests, caged birds, helicopters The collective dreams and aspirations of mankind, both benevolent and cruel Flickering and bent by fingers of orange and red The wind carried the howls of distant wild dogs, and the procession responded in kind An exorcism was taking place The ensuing cacophony engulfed our senses The blaze spread over the grass underbrush, yet they continued to dance through the flames Suddenly, a fresh breeze and a gentle rain poured over the clearing We felt as though we had been transported 6 feet underground And we could hear nothing but the wriggling of worms and our very own hearts As we resurfaced, we realized that the entire world had been transformed Our environment was familiar yet incomprehensible, comforting yet inexplicably strange We felt lighter As the dancing resumed around the smoldering embers, a slow, droning song emerged And our voices united into a single chorus
