Fire up the barbecue, father it's time There's gin in your tonic, there's lemon and lime Though Winter is coming, the sun's shining bright Everything is all right An end is in sight Though mother's quite chilly, the kids think it's fine To choose an exterior in which to dine So out with the sausages, drumsticks and ribs All eyes on his nibs, who'll get the first dibs? At the foot of the garden a bonfire is burning The smoky aroma sets their stomachs yearning But the bangers smell different from mum's usual fare Recognise if you dare, that scent of singed hair Oh father, pray tell us where mother is hiding The look on his face says he still is deciding To tell or to not tell the fate of his spouse Who, try as we might, can't be found in this house With a look of embarrassment, tinged with mischief He offers an answer that beggars belief With a crack from the bonfire they all turn around There's a sizzling sound, as it falls to the ground Now dad's misdemeanour is clearly revealed A wedding ringed finger, all burnt and congealed (What's going on, dad? Yeah, come on, tell us!) His son demands answers, so brazen and bold All right, son - if the truth should be told (Yeah, come on - let's 'ave it!) She was feeling quite cold... I turn from my father and stifling a cry I pick up a skewer and plunge it through his eye So, fire up the barbecue, father it's time There's gin in your tonic, there's lemon and lime Though Winter is coming, the sun still shines bright Everything is all right There's an ending in sight
