When I was young And I was strong I grabbed this land Before my money was gone We lived in a shack That had one door I was a taxi hack And we slept on the floor I tilled & I planted My garden beds I played reggae music And I grew long dreads It was freedom on my land Freedom from the norm My way to make a stand My shelter from the storm The stars were bright The air was clean The water flowed In a turquoise stream I grew to love the cypress trees And all the blossoms were filled with bees I made my way as a carpenter I managed to pay the bills My woman left It was me & the kids On our land out in the hills I worked & I worked Through the ebbs & the flows The struggles continued Till my true love showed It was just by chance Under the stars above We laughed & we danced And made beautiful love Throughout the years We made it home The kids grew up And found their own My true love slipped Through the veil And I was all alone Along with the foxes & the squirrels & the deer It was me & my guitar Singing through the laughter & singing through the tears Under the moon & the stars One man's story Amongst a bunch Along with the others I have a hunch Our beliefs may be Like day & night But we howl at the moon And we rise with the light Some live in castles And some live in shacks But at the end of the day We have each other's backs We come together Through our love for the land Like birds of a feather We make our stand
