We were standing atop Meridian Sunsetting orange flames John smoking and saying "What if New York were just as close To heaven as we are tonight" I didn't really get what he meant by that But it sounded pretty I knew in thirty or so minutes once the sun was down The hotel guests would be out here at the bar And I had to disappear. But the way John Held onto each cigarette drag - those sharp lips and Leather eyes lit by the ember flaring at his fingertips - I wanted to watch him glow forever. Don't shit where you eat they said they said but When you work in a slaughterhouse Everything looks like it'll be good in your mouth After some time. it was then I noticed the way John rubbed his fingers along the cheekbones of Our last job. "Bankers always have the best jawlines" He said "Always eating. always hungry" I asked him "Have you ever eaten a man before?" He shined his yellow teeth with a point to point smile and whispered. We made love after every job since. I told him I loved him and he looked at me like a dog. The time after that ended in an argument. And by the time after now I'll be a hundred miles between Birmingham and John's beautiful body beading blood at the bottom of the boxcar. I can still hear him smile.
