About Come on Do the Jerk

Come On Do the Jerk (Tamla 54109) was a 1964 song recorded by R&B group the Miracles on Motown Records' Tamla label subsidiary. A single-only release, it did not appear on any original Miracles studio album, and was the group's last single release of 1964. Co-written by Miracles members Pete Moore, Bobby Rogers, Smokey Robinson, and Ronnie White, "Come On Do the Jerk" charted at #50 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at # 22 on the Cash Box R&B chart.(Billboard had temporarily suspended its R&B chart at this time). An instructional dance number, this song was one of several songs based on the jerk, a very popular 1960s "dance craze". Robinson and fellow Miracle Bobby Rogers were the song's producers. Described by Miracles lead singer Smokey Robinson as the intended follow-up song to the group's 1963 million-selling smash "Mickey's Monkey" the previous year, "Come On Do the Jerk" was actually recorded in a similar tempo. As the song begins, longtime Miracles drummer Donald "Spike" Whited and Miracles member, guitarist Marv Tarplin begin the song, while Smokey, as the song's narrator, offers the invitation:

Come on do the jerk (come on do the jerk)
Come on do the jerk (come on do the jerk)
'Cause the jerk's alright, jerk all day (jerk children)
Jerk all day (jerk, children)
Everybody now gather around (jerk, children)
Get hip to the new sensation (jerk, children)
There's a brand new dance coming to your town (jerk, children)
And sweeping across the nation (jerk, children)
Come on do the jerk everybody (come on do the jerk)
I said, come on do the jerk everybody (come on do the jerk)
Now snap your back like a bullwhip crack
Now jerk your hip, let your backbone slip

You've done the monkey, you've done the twist (jerk, children)
And the mashed potatoes too (jerk, children)

The swim and the fly have all gone by (jerk, children)
There's a brand new dance for you (jerk, children)
Come on do the jerk everybody (come on do the jerk)
I said, come on do the jerk right now (come on do the jerk)

You've got to bob and weave
Come on bob and weave
And when you do
Let your neck snap, too
Yeah, yeah, yeah
It's alright

Well now jerk, children, jerk (jerk, children, jerk)
Come on jerk, children, jerk (jerk, children, jerk)
Well now jerk, children, jerk (jerk, children, jerk)
Ooh wee, jerk, children, jerk (jerk, children, jerk)

Well now jerk to the left and jerk to the right

Jerk all day and jerk all night
Jerk it hard and jerk it soft
Jerk your hands and arms right off

Come on do the jerk in the morning now (come on do the jerk)
Ooh wee, come on do the jerk right now (come on do the jerk)
Now snap your back (now snap your back) like a bullwhip crack (like a bullwhip crack)
Now jerk your hip (now jerk your hip), let your backbone slip (let your back bone slip)

Yeah, come on do the jerk, come now (come on do the jerk) (jerk, children)
Everybody come on do the jerk right now (jerk, children) (come on do the jerk) (jerk, children)
Come, jerk, children, jerk (jerk, children) (jerk, children, jerk) (jerk children)
Come on, said jerk, children, jerk (jerk, children) (jerk, children, jerk) (jerk, children)
Jerk, jerk, children jerk (jerk, children) (jerk, jerk, children, jerk) (jerk, children)
