I haven't heard that in a while
I'd rather be far gone without it
I've never harmed a single soul
And I have served my nickel for it
I ask of others not a lot
I ask of you only a little
I have a massive task at hand
At which away I can only whittle
I'll whittle away and bide my time
I'll calculate each verse and line
And though I've yet to sort my mind
I will group each breath with its own kind
I will serve and search and ponder
I will carry on undistracted
And if there's anything to wonder
It's if there's breaths to be retracted
What if I wasted even just one?
Would I be able to redo it?
Or would I find forgiveness elsewhere?
Could I rework, retry, or rue it?
I think at some point along the line
I'll split my breath right where it stands
To bide my time, line, mind and kind
And actually have a fighting chance
Then I will breathe forever more
Though it will take somebody else
To pick up mine and carry it forward
Until we've reached the end of ourselves
I always thought somehow or other
Heroes truly must exist
If memory serves I also figure
It simply does not serve enough
And while we're at it let's acknowledge
That it was not only just one
That died for all our sins
And as it ends, so it begins
