I used to not know how to read
I used to not be able to understand
I'd say, what does that word say that I see

I wished I could make books talk to me
And make pictures in my head
And all the signs on the road I see
Could tell me what they said
And when my Mom tries to spell stuff
When she tries to keep secrets from me
I'd listen close, and maybe write it down
And it would all make sense to me

I'd say, what does that word say that I see

I thought learning to read would be really hard 
But it's not too tough for me
I'm gonna get better at it every day
You just wait and see
I can't wait until I know all the words
And can figure out what they say
My teachers' got tools that I can use
And she shows me 'em every day

Different letters got different sounds
And different shapes to fit your mouth around
There's lots of words that I know by sight
It's hard to explain, but I know when I'm right
And words can be broken in pieces
When they're just too big for you
You read each one, glue 'em back when you're done
That 's all that you've got to do
A, E, I, O

You can learn if you really try
And you'll know what I mean when I say
It feels so good to know I can read
I think about it every day
I went to my school, and to a special class 
Now I'm reading a book that is fun
I'm not sure how it's all going to end
But it started with CHAPTER ONE
