I was struck with awe and wonder as that woman caught my eye
Glory be, Lord!  How in thunder could I ever pass her by?
She was an angel waitin' tables in a city with a jagged sky
I came rollin' off the highway, sat myself down at table five

As I looked through a tattered menu she said to me, "Can I see a smile?"
I said "Honey, if your name is in here, I got a grin that will stretch a mile"
We got to talkin' as she waited tables, but the real discussion was in our eyes
And it occurred to me I was in the presence of another as alone as I

She had the sadness of a highway, and opportunity drove on by
We like to gamble with the hilltop and go for what's on the other side
She landed right here in a diner somewhere
And that's how fate contrives, but what was happenin' here
At table five?

We were strangers, careless with secrets. When hearts are searchin' they open wide
And we were honest, like we were best friends, or maybe lovers who forget to lie
I had some sorrows that I had buried, and when I mentioned them at table five
She went to diggin' up a dead man's story, and made that dead man come alive

And the strangest thing was happenin'. I can't explain it and will not try
There've been many passin' women. I never thought I could make one cry
She wept at my words, and I rose like a bird
Her tears brought me to life right there

My head was spinnin' like a radial tire, and for a moment, I was mesmerized
But out beyond this angel's shoulder diesel trucks and cars kept whizzin' by
So I keep wanderin' endless highways; in and out of painted skies
A rollin' load of restless yearnin' burnin' down that skyway line

I'm just a prisoner of the highway. I gotta be movin' to do my time
And you'll see me on the horizon, and hear that Chevrolet engine whine
It'll all end somehow, but I sure can't stop now
It must be on the next rise.  It wasn't back there
