COYBOYS PRAYER
Gary McCray House Of Joysong Publshing
Recitation:

You know it's been said that God knew when he created the cowboy, they were gonna need a special kind of spirit. And that spirit has become known as the cowboy way. The cowboy, then and now, has his own special way of doing everything, even when he's praying to his maker. With his hat in hand, he kneels down on one knee, looks up toward the sky and says, Lord, I've come before you to make a talk. You know I ain't ever kneeled before man or beast, though I have been thrown in every direction known. I know you know who I am, but more important, Lord, you know what I am. So, at times like these, I just come before you to saymuch obliged for watchin' over me.

I've learned to work my rope and saddle
I'm friendly with one lucky Irish hound
I live on beans and bacon, cowboys ain't fit for tyin' down
I ain't cut out for city livin', I love to spread my bed roll
Out among the stars along the trail
And pray someday I'll go to heaven
Heaven knows I've had my share of hell

CHORUS:

Till then I'll ride the open prairie, cross the Oklahoma red dirt
Leave sorrows lyin' in a dusty trail
I'll pray for tender mercies, heaven knows I don't feel worthy
Sometimes I get lost on broken trails
And pray someday I'll go to heaven
Heaven knows I've had my share of hell

Old lucky's getting' older
The fight in him keeps runnin' off to hide
I know he ain't worth a biscuit
But he's company and he's always by my side
I know my pistol grips are slippin'
My eagle eye stays on your light
But in the old red wind my vision sometimes fails
So I pray someday I'll go to heaven
Heaven knows I've had my share of hell

CHORUS and TAG two lines:

I'll pray someday I'll go to heaven
Heaven knows I've had my share of hell
