COMMENTATOR 1:
We’re off.

England looking to get forward. Strong start by the boys in white, keeping the ball well. Long ball forward by Hope, but straight out and will be a goal kick. Intercepted nicely by Arnold, who passes to Kane, who brings the ball into the box, gets the cross in, surely a tap in for Wilson. Saved!

COMMENTATOR 2:
Offside; the flag went up late, but Wilson wasn’t to know, but a great bit of play by England. Arnold showing desire by winning the ball off a rather poor goal kick, drives forward, finding Kane in oceans of space, who could have played the ball back to Arnold, doesn’t, instead opts for the cross, who unfortunately finds Wilson in an offside position.

COMMENTATOR 1:
Again, Arnold and Sancho pushing forward as a pair down this right hand side. Good cross by Sancho; no one there to meet, and calmly collected by Patricio.

COMMENTATOR 2:
They’re having some joy down this near side, clever play initially creating a two to one situation with the defender; unsure if he should stop the cross or go with the runner. Guerreiro all over the place.

COMMENTATOR 1:
Silva was fouled there. Free kick to Portugal in a dangerous area, and an opportunity for Fonte and Dias to get in the box and put some pressure on the goalkeeper. Fernandes with the ball in, Jota with the header, and out for a goal kick.

COMMENTATOR 2:
England look secure from set pieces with Maguire and Smith at the back; the ball’s like a magnet to them.

COMMENTATOR 1:
England have only conceded three goals from ten games from set pieces, and one of those was from an unfortunate own goal.

COMMENTATOR 2:
Yeah, they look really well organised at the back; going to be difficult for Portugal to break them down.

COMMENTATOR 1:
Nice turn by Hope. Plays it out wide to Marangone, who drives forward, looking to take on Cancelo. Back to Rose, who finds Kane on the edge of the box. Tries to find a pass through. Rolls out to Smith to try and drive one…

COMMENTATOR 2:
Good effort from Smith. Tries to cut across it and slices it just wide of the post, but the keeper had it covered all the way. Really nice build-up play, all started with Hope in the centre of the field, who played it out to Marangone, who in turn fed the ball into the path of Rose, who was making up a lot of ground down that left hand side. Good all round play from England.

COMMENTATOR 1:
Goal kick, nicely taken down by Fernandes, loses it to Maddison, who plays a long ball into the path of Kane. Ooh, that’s a high challenge.

COMMENTATOR 2:
He could be off here, you know; it was a very high challenge. The referee has a big call to make now.

COMMENTATOR 1:
He’s checking with the linesman…

COMMENTATOR 2:
VAR are taking a look at this…

COMMENTATOR 1:
The red card comes out and Guerreiro is off.

COMMENTATOR 2:
Wow! What a moment! This could give England the chance to push forward and make the extra man count.

COMMENTATOR 1:
The Portuguese team surround the referee, but he has deemed the foul dangerous and reckless, resulting in a straight red card. This will mean, should Portugal win, Guerreiro will miss the next game.

COMMENTATOR 2:
We can see it here on the replay: that was a very bad challenge and deservedly sent off.

COMMENTATOR 1:
England press on in the hunt for the opening goal, with Marangone showing his strength there to win the ball back from Silva, plays a lovely ball into Maddison, who plays it into Wilson, who looks to get at Fonte, takes the shot. The shot was a little bit tame in the end.

COMMENTATOR 2:
Great link up play again on the left hand side, playing the ball through the middle, finding the space in the centre, nice dummy run from Hope, Dias is ball-watching, which then puts pressure on Fonte, who isn’t the quickest. Luckily the shot was straight at the keeper.

COMMENTATOR 1:
Now Portugal can break: there’s some space in behind for Aldo to run into. Plays it into Fernandes, nice piece of skill, and again, gets the ball into the box. Wide. Fernandes not happy with himself there, did all the hard work, but the final ball wasn’t good enough.

COMMENTATOR 2:
Initially good play out from the back. Arnold gets caught high up the pitch, and, as a defender, one person you do not want running towards you is Aldo. Maguire does well to hold him up. Great bit of skill to play in Fernandes: neat feet, tidy play, but poor end product.

COMMENTATOR 1:
England now looking to push wide with Sancho, all a bit congested in the centre. Portugal are defending deep and getting everyone behind the ball. Through pass into Hope, good control, lovely ball into the box, and Wilson scores!

COMMENTATOR 2:
Goal! It’s a goal for England!

COMMENTATOR 1:
Wonderful header. England have the breakthrough they’ve been looking for, the patience has paid off at long, long last, paid off!

COMMENTATOR 2:
This is just absolute perfection. England know they have the extra man, they get forward, get men into the box.

COMMENTATOR 1:
There was an air of nervousness around the stadium as we approach the final stages of the game, but it’s pure elation as the fans go wild.

That’s it! There’s the final whistle. England progress into the next stage of the competition with a solid 1-0 win.

COMMENTATOR 2:
Great team performance. This is exactly what the manager wanted to see from his players: desire to get to the ball, patient build-up play, and a clean sheet.
