Handsome Johnny

Mixed Bag is the debut studio album by Richie Havens and was released in 1966. Although it was Havens' first album release, Douglas Records later issued two unauthorized albums of material that had been recorded prior to the Mixed Bag recording sessions—Electric Havens (1968) and Richie Havens' Record (1969). Mixed Bag was released after Havens signed on with manager Albert Grossman and was released on Verve Folkways, a new folk music imprint of Verve Records.Mixed Bag is frequently cited as the singer's best work, and was his first album to appear on Billboard's charts (appearing on both the jazz and pop charts). When Johnny left ghost town
His baby girl broke down
She drowned herself in sorrow
But Johnny he moved on
Glad to feel alive
And on the road again
The road of endless miles
Where evil’s in disguise
Under the spell of the adventure
Johnny didn’t seem to notice
That the night turned black as raven while the sky
Had start to cry
Torne and frayed, left alone
Baby girl cried and then she moaned
While Johnny was getting stoned
While Johnny faced the rain
The devil was on his way
He was riding with the wind
Had this sweet voice carried out; Johnny
And that made Johnny feel all free again
This strange voice feels like a long lost friend
And the Prince of darkness came stayed overnight
Near Johnny’s side
The devil had plans with our Johnny
Taste so good sweeter then honey
The boy’s wasting his soul
And the Devil said
Well boy don’t you think twice
And I’ll give a good advice
You put your trust in me
I am good company
I’ll get you richdom and success
You never have to do with less
And someday Johnny you can pay me back
If you say yes
No one heard what the devil had said
But where he came for you can guess
And Johnny? He said yes
A day since Johnny left
And already he’s in debt
And the devil won’t forget
One day he will come back
And then catch Johnny by surprise
With fiery flames in his eyes
No bargain for salvation this time
When the deal’s gone down
Handsome Johnny is looking for gold
It didn’t work out that’s what I’ve been told
Johnny pays on judgment day
