It started when I was browsing through real estate listings Have done much of America, I moved on to other countries I recalled seeing an episode of Rick Steves where he was traveling through Hungaria And he commented about how affordable everything was So I went and I looked at Hungarian real estate Lo and behold it was pretty cheap That's when I decided There was a little villa, in the countryside, just outside the city of Vylyan That's what I went for There was a farm, three storeys And these old Russian machines inside Furnaces with logos on the front Symbols of a language I could not read The villagers saw me as something of an oddity They were wary of this American who had come in their midst Soon stares turned into a little bit more An occasional rock hit the house General feelings of ill will That's when I asked one of them who could speak some English If he knew perhaps, out in the countryside, of a local witch He was hesitant to tell me so, but yes, there was There was such a woman who lived in the countryside Rumored to be a witch Few dared visit her I asked for her location He told me He asked if he should go with me and I said no If she was really a witch, she would know the day I would come I would not announce it Days past and I thought There was a proposition I had for her And on a night when the clouds gathered I went to her place, stood outside the door And it opened I told her of my plan I said, You are out here in this hovel And I have a large villa on some land I could use the assistance, you see, of a witch living there Because the locals, wary of me, would be fearful of you They would not attack a witch She thought about this And I invited her to come and see So on a clear day she came She saw the downstairs, large and spacious I told her she could bring whatever she needed And she did, agreeing And took me up on this offer And so the witch came to live with me in my Hungarian home The villagers did not bother us for a time They did not know what to make of this American Who shacked-up with the local witch In time, as I got to know her, she didn't seem as old In fact she seemed as if she were growing younger One night this stood in stark reality, and she was not old at all And I came downstairs in the candlelight to behold her there The rustic stone wall behind her, she, unclothed Dark raven hair, smiling Saying that our agreement could be something more If only I were to acquiesce If only I were to acquiesce My time in Hungary is not something to be described further at this juncture As I am still trying to process the events which transpired However, let it be said that I at least survived the ordeal Which is more than can be said for some of the villagers Who were our harshest critics
